Since 2011, The Currency Vault has been trading in a variety of commodities, most notably Currencies. Whilst we understand the monetary value of money, The Currency Vault is passionate about preserving, educating and celebrating our rich Australian history. We aim to embrace and learn from the current collecting community, passing on their stories to new generations of emerging interest. Each Note, Coin or Collectible come with their own unique, mythical fairytale like stories. Our fascinating Australian coinage story began in the latter half of the 18th Century, a time when Australia was trading and bartering “rum” as its main commodity. The newly appointed governor of NSW “Sir Lachlan Macquarie” recognised this as a problem and reported our trade limitations to London. At this point England was dealing with their own coin shortage, they were able to acknowledge and rectify the problems the governor inherited, by sending $10, 000 Spanish Dollars. We have our fifth governor of NSW Sir Lachlan Macquarie, to thank for introducing what we know now as the “Holey Dollar”.
